Leading Healthcare IoT Companies – Pharmaceutical Technology

IoT is an important tool across the pharma industry and continues to be implemented by leading companies. Top pharma IoT companies are leading the way in early adoption.

Internet of Things (IoT) is an umbrella term referring to the ability of everyday physical objects (such as fridges, watches or cars) to connect with other devices over the internet, enabling them to send and receive data.

With the increased application, new opportunities and potential threats emerge for pharma companies’ IoT applications and usage.

Whether it is R&D, manufacturing, production, or supply chain structures, all require a streamlined and efficient process.

IoT is used to optimise company performance and reduce waste while managing resource usage.

IoT offers a range of opportunities for pharma companies to enhance their industry agility, as well as corporate cost efficiency.

Are you considering the relevance of IoT to your business?

GlobalData’s report can help you understand the bigger picture by analysing IoT-related filing trends across the Pharma sector in 2021.

Uncover overarching company sentiment and underlying patterns hidden in vast amounts of financial and non-financial data to get a grasp on the outlook for the technology theme and its evolution in view of major market events such as Covid-19.

When it comes to pharmaceutical manufacturing, pharma companies’ IoT usage can impact everything from supply chains to clinical development and patient services.

Using IoT to reduce the time it takes to get a drug to market, as well as monitor product quality. This shows how the value chain is positively impacted.

Real-world usage of IoT in pharma can be seen in operations, compliance, manufacturing, and development.

One example is Microsoft‘s healthcare IoT solutions. These are designed to combine IoT-enabled devices with advanced data analytics, connecting web-enabled devices to a centralised hub.

This helps when it comes to delivering and deciphering real-time, real-world data, and enhances analytical capabilities for pharma companies.

Latest innovations by top pharma IoT companies

Israeli start-up OneLayer has launched a cybersecurity platform that secures IoT devices on private cellular networks using an identity-based approach.

The platform integrates existing security tools with its authorisation, authentication, and accounting software and extends its capabilities to the cellular domain rather than using IP (Internet Protocol) and NAC (Network access control) protocols.

Nature of disruption

Each IoT device is given an identity by OneLayer, which follows it across Wi-Fi and cellular network connections.

This security policy is enforced based on the device’s identity. The platform has a cloud-based design and can secure private 5G or LTE (Long-Term Evolution) networks.

Anomaly detection, network segmentation, micro-segmentation, and visibility services such as deep packet inspection are among OneLayer’s security capabilities.

All connected devices are visible in live time, including device type, inter-network identity matching, vulnerabilities, location, and activity. This makes use of device identification to enforce corporate NAC policies automatically, delivering increased security.

Using this platform, abnormal devices and unusual traffic activity are detected, allowing a swift response to misconfiguration and malicious activities.

It provides zero-trust authentication while allowing new devices to be admitted and connected automatically.

IoT outlook

Although private LTE/5G could be more secure, many existing security solutions are unable to completely safeguard the network, making it exposed to cyberattacks.

With its IoT security toolset implemented in a cellular environment, OneLayer addresses this issue, providing a LAN-like interface for managing private 5G networks.

OneLayer is currently focused on the manufacturing and healthcare verticals, with plans to expand to all IoT use cases in the future.

For an upcoming release, the start-up is working on endpoint detection and response, as well as zero-trust authentication. In March 2022, OneLayer raised $8.2m in seed funding led by Grove Ventures and Viola Ventures.

It plans to use the funds to develop its product, expand its reach globally, and cooperate with other tech firms to establish a private LTE and 5G cyber-risk assessment and validation lab.

Applications of IoT in pharma

With the Covid-19 pandemic, the pharma industry has evolved in terms of IoT usage and application. Industrial mechanics, material tracking, smart devices, and clinical trials have all enjoyed the benefit of this enhanced usage.
